MY BIG FAT CARBON FOOTPRINT
There is much talk of carbon footprints nowadays, and people want you to pay for your carbon footprint by 'offsetting'.
UPDATE 18/11/08
- Climatecare.org appears to have raised their offsetting prices
as well as removing their mileage calculator , not sure when they did this
actually,
but the new flights added to this page should reflect the price change. Either
way,
more reasons to be wary of the offsetters.
So i figured i might try and work
out my footprint, knowing that i fly an awful lot for business, and for pleasure,
i wanted to see just how much of a blight I really am.
So, i need to write all my flights
down.. Luckily, as i'm such a clepto, i keep all of
my boarding cards as a memento, so this actually makes the job a lot easier
:-)
(I'm only permanently
missing the boarding cards from first 5 flights i ever took, which i think
is close to obsession :)

Discussion, and related topics: The one thing I wanted to highlight with this page is that carbon offsetting is a very unprecise science... if you can call it a science at all. The companies that are selling you carbon offsets disagree with each other not only on the amounts of carbon that are discharged by air travel, but also on the cost to offset them. I do not think that all the offsetters are funding new projects, or using the money well. In any case, 60% or more of what you pay to offset is actually going on administration, and the companies' bottom line. Until there is definitive (or as close to possible) results for carbon discharge for air travel, i wouldn't pay any money to any company that is trying to guilt-trip me into buying carbon offsets. For something that directly relates to this page of mine, I suggest you watch the Channel 4 Despatches episode 'The great green smokescreen' to get a better view on companies that are now selling you carbon offsetting and their differing methods. If you've watched the film by Al Gore An Inconvenient Truth you will probably be thinking about reverting to a much simpler way of life. Basically i don't trust the science in Al Gores' film, his temperature records appear to be skewed, and he has selectively chosen scientific studies that only support his view in order to make his point. Foremost, he's a politician, not a climate scientist, and at the end of the day he's preaching because there is a lot of money to be made from green policies. And if the governments around the world have it their way, they may start TAXING us based on our carbon emissions. For a general overview of counter-green issues, check this wikipedia article out. How about watching the great global warming swindle - although much discussion has followed this programme and on the contributers to it. Try and watch CBS Newsworld Doomsday called off. Why are you such a sceptic? Because green campaigners are employed to tell companies and the rest of us that there is a problem. Their job depends upon it, so they aren't going to take no for an answer are they? if there actually is no problem, they're out of a job surely? So its in their best interests to perpetuate the agenda of the global warming problem. While i agree that humans make an impact, its not doomsday quite as they say it is - to justify their job. Don't forget, that in the 1970's green campaigners and the scientific community were talking about 'The Big Chill' - yes, scientists looking at temperatures in a 50 year period noted that the temperature was dropping from WW2 until the late 70's, they expected it to continue and were warning of a coming ice-age! I think that a similar thing has occured in recent years, people have seen rises in global temperatures over a very short space of time and its time to break out the gas masks and go live in the shelter you built in the garden that was no use in the cold war - that also never happened. We are human, and we like to think that we are big and important, but the truth is, we are quite insignificant, and it is our own egos that make us think we are such a blight on the environment. Its also hard for us big-headed humans to comprehend the vastness of time, and that we are merely a bad smelling fart in the long long history of planet earth. I have studied Geology academically, and the thing we kept coming back to was just how staggeringly long the earth has been around, and that we are actually coming out of an ice age anyway, so what do you think happens when you come out of an ice age? Bearing in mind these transition periods take 10,000 years or so, its gonna get a bit warmer eh? |

I sound like a right old fascist eh? The immediate thing that people usually say to someone like me that questions the whole 'global warming crisis' is that I've been listening to the oil companies too much. Oh yeh? who do you think is trying to sell you the new 'renewable' forms of energy, and is setting up, financing the carbon offsetting programmes? The big oil companies, big business. So be wary of what you accuse me of. I have mistrust of people with agendas and i don't trust what the governments have to say about this whole issue. I think its too early to say for sure what is and isn't causing it. Modern governments are a bit too quick to address tiny issues that concern the populace from one week to the next, instead of concentrating on enduring policy. This phenomenon has been summarised nicely in the metaphor 'Eight People Sipping Wine in Kettering' go watch that series. I don't like pollution, i realise that i am polluting by flying so much, for that, i apologise. I don't trust any carbon 'offsetting' scheme, they are mostly deeply flawed, and just another way for someone to trick you out of your money under the guise of a good cause. Its a good plan though, all this bru-ha ha about global warming, its a convenient way to take the publics' attention away from the middle-east and the total mess we're in over there. I'm not surprised the governments are pushing this ill-informed global warming scam on us, get the public militant about something, so long as its not about the war and we'll be ok :-) MY DEFENSE: When I work in London, i use the trains all the time (for my sins), even for short journeys into the town centre, it'll be by walking and the train. Around the world i favour public transport over anything else. At the end of the day, there are way too many factors involved in arguing a point either way, its up to each of us to make our own minds up, and not be preached to, we're all human, and make mistakes in facts and in judgement. So in all honesty, we have no hope, we are a meandering bunch of lunatics destined for that religious apocolypse that some people would have you believe is also, fast approaching. |
